The Chemnitz Tram Museum, located in the historic hall dating back to 1908, presents a unique collection of narrow-gauge and standard-gauge railcars, as well as buses spanning over 125 years of urban mobility. Housed in the old Kappel depot, the museum invites visitors not only to admire the technology but also to experience it interactively – for example, by operating ticket machines or paying booths. During the summer months, visitors can even enjoy a short ride on an open-top railcar in the outdoor area, transforming the museum into a living testimony to the past.

Volunteering and experience are everywhere

The museum is managed by the Chemnitz Tramway Friends Association, who have dedicated themselves to the restoration of historic vehicles on a voluntary basis since 1987. The active members meet regularly on Tuesdays and Saturdays to maintain the vehicles and are available to provide a visual history of the aircraft. The intensive maintenance work includes wood and metalworking as well as technical training, which visitors experience as a tangible attention to detail.

Museum days, guided tours and hands-on opportunities

From April to October, the museum invites you to special bus museum days with historical tours on the last Saturday of every month – ideal for families and those interested in technology. Groups can also visit the museum individually and book guided tours, which are multilingual and educational. Thanks to modern additions such as the mobile Buseum and interactive timetables, the offerings remain fresh, diverse, and always surprising.
